Mental Health and Holidays

It is not uncommon for the holiday season to bring unwelcome guests. Stress and depression are those unwanted guests. There are many reasons for this, and they are not always obvious. Holidays can be stressful due to the demands they present, such as shopping, baking, cleaning, repairs, and entertaining, just to name a few.

You may also feel additional stress if Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading in your community or your loved one’s health is in question. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, you may also feel stressed, sad, or anxious.

You should avoid lashing out, making unplanned decisions, isolating yourself from your family, ignoring your responsibilities, or returning to old habits like doing drugs, smoking, or drinking. If you begin to feel overwhelmed, try to focus on the positives instead.

Be thankful for what you have and do what you can. Seek out positive people who will encourage you or seek professional assistance. Understand who you are and what you are capable of and do your part. Make sure you do not put yourself under pressure to participate in activities or situations that are stressful.

Not everyone takes the time to reflect and reevaluate. Sadly, people are injured and lose precious lives simply because someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. Identify warning signs among family members and seek assistance. More importantly, please exercise caution when you are out and about. Please do not allow one day to negatively impact the awesome person that you are.  This Holiday and Everything Else Will Pass!
